It is now nearly sixty years since Colonel Jimmy Roberts founded Mountain Travel Nepal. This, as the first trekking and mountaineering company in the country, effectively developed the concept and standards for the now worldwide 'adventure tourism' industry that has since evolved.
Our Sherpas, are mostly from the Khumbu (Everest) area. Generally recruited young, they are well-trained and gradually gain experience. Some become 'sirdars' (trek leaders), others join some of the finest technical climbing and expedition support teams in the world. The word Sherpa has become synonymous with friendly service and high professionalism.
What has kept Mountain Travel ahead? Those same Sherpas, our excellent office staff, good communications with both agents and guests, in depth knowledge of Nepal and Tibet, and first class equipment and food in the field.
The link up with Tiger Tops in 1975 under the 'Tiger Mountain' name gave the group a co-ordinated image and diverse quality products. In the1980s and 90s we took a wide variety of people trekking including the Prince of Wales, Dianna Ross, Goldie Hawn and Robert Redford. We also provided logistic support to major Himalayan expeditions for the likes of Chris Bonnington, Reinhold Messner, Arne Naess and Al Read, to name but a few.
In trekking we originally specialized in meeting the specific needs of private groups and individual clients. These from agents and direct clients mainly from the USA, Australia, Europe and expatriate residents in south east Asia and Nepal. Subsequently, the perceived need to compete, led in part to moving away from our traditional tented treks and offering a variety of 'Teahouse' treks with guests staying overnight in lodges (known as teahouses). Whilst being somewhat less expensive- not by very much these days- it is difficult to guarantee quality, and 'all-inclusive' pricing commonly used by agents in Nepal sometimes leaves clients dissatisfied.
So we are moving back to basics and concentrating on what we do best- tailor-made, Sherpa supported, tented treks exploring areas away from trails where tea houses and indeed now, roads have proliferated. We offer a series of good value 'Fixed Start Date' group departures on preselected dates which individuals from anywhere in the world can join and most of which will be guaranteed to operate, even with only one client and with no surcharges.
For Individuals, friends and families, who wish to trek together, we can arrange treks to suit your individual
needs. Let us know your aims, fitness, time available and dates you can travel. We will respond with suggestions which will also suit the time of year. Whether in the more popular months of October, November, March, April orthe less trekked, but still excellent, months of December,January, February or May, there are always trek areas to suit.
Finally, 'Expedition Support' and 'Trekking Peak' climbs. Whilst Mountain Travel has the reputation of having the finest climbing sherpas in the business, this does not mean we are expensive when it comes to tackling 'higher aims' in the mountains. Whether planning to climb in Nepal or Tibet, please feel free to let us know your ideas.
Tented Treks
Following these notes is a list of 'Fixed Start Date' treks. They offer a good cross section of routes through
villages, hills, valleys, forest, and high altitude grazing pasture, all with outstanding views of the high Himalayas. Dates suit the normal weather pattern, altitude, and temperature prevailing at the time in those
areas. Generally, the routes keep away from the more heavily trekked teahouse areas.
They are all tented treks. Mountain Travel provides all sleeping, dining and toilet tents, sleeping bags and
mattresses. A team of sherpas will be headed by a Sirdar (trek manager), cook and cook boys as well as sufficient, locally employed, porters to carry all the gear. All you need to carry is a day pack with your needs to cover that particular walk.
We have kept prices very competitive and, wherever possible,we also offer choices of transport e.g. for Pokhara based treks, air, private road transfer (car or minibus) or travel by
reasonably comfortable 'tourist bus.' All Pokhara treks start and finish in Pokhara so guests can use our assistance for hotel reservations, transport to and from Pokhara, or make independent travel arrangements themselves.
Some of these itineraries will also give you ideas for putting together your own groups - with friends, or family or just to 'get away from it all' by yourself. We will happily tailor make these itineraries to meet your needs and
timings.
Also available are a wide range of Alpine style and Climbing treks, including of course the Khumbu (Everest)
area, and less travelled areas such as upper Mustang, Dolpo, Lake Rara, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Rasuwa at the north end of the Trisuli river, and the Rolwaling valley. In the east, Makalu base camp, the Arun valley, Topke Khola area and the Kanchenjunga Massif also beckon. Feel free to ask and we will send you full information and recommendations.
Lodge (Teahouse) Trekking
Most of the more heavily trekked and easily accessible routes are well catered for with lodges available in all the local villages. Standards have improved over the years and in some areas such as the Khumbu (Everest ) and immediate Annapurna areas, teahouse trekking is often the answer.
From meeting on international flight arrival and taking you to a pre-booked hotel, to final departure from
Kathmandu we can look after all arrangements, in the same way we do for our tented treks. On trek we will provide a guide, support sherpas dependant on the number in the group, and porters to carry your gear. Most teahouses now offer single or double rooms, separate toilets, shower and washing facilities, a simple but comfortable dining area and a variety of food and drink. Your guide can help you select the best lodge and you pay directly for your accommodation and food.
What we will do is charge you standard rates for each guide and porter employed, 'at cost' transport arrangements (including Sherpas, equipment, and porter transfer costs) to and from trek, your trek permit and conservation area or national park permits (where applicable), porter insurance, and any taxes that have to be paid.
Normally 'guide' charge will be US$ 30 per guide per day and porter charge US$ 15 per porter per day (subject to change). We can advise how many staff will be needed dependant on group size. Mountain Travel will add a 'Service Charge' for making all the arrangements. For treks of less than 6 days, this will be US$ 50 per client, and for 6 days or more, US$ 100 per client.
We believe this to be a better, more transparent and fairer system than the normal 'all inclusive' price charged by most agents. It also allows you maximum flexibility and choice.
De-luxe Lodge Trekking
'Yeti Mountain Homes' operate de-luxe lodges in the Khumbu (Everest) area. They currently have five lodges in
traditional Sherpa villages, at Lukla, Phakding (en route to amche), at Namche bazaar itself, and then north
west to the stark beauty of Thame village. Our treks will normally be based on these four lodges, but for the more
adventurous, and after a period for acclimatization in Thame, a fifth option exists. This is a stunning remote
lodge built on the northern slopes of Kwangde peak. It has outstanding mountain views and looks down on
Namche, Syangboche, and Sir Edmund Hillary's favourite villages of Khunde and Khumjung. Yeti has the big
advantage of operating its own airline. This based on the reliable Twin Otter STOL aircraft to and from Lukla,
helicopters or new 7 seater STOL Pilatus Porter aircraft (which can operate in and out of the Syangboche airstrip
above Namche Bazaar).
Detailed itineraries and prices are available on request
Whether trekking, mountaineering, river running or expanding your Himalayan holiday with a visit to our wildlife
lodges in Chitwan or Bardia National Parks, you will be given a warm welcome and personal attention by 'Tiger
Mountain'.

Good farming country, Gurung villages, beautiful river valleys, forests and ridge lines leading up to high plateau grazing on the southern flanks of the mountain range itself. The last night of the trek is spent in the comfort of Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge perched on a ridgeline above the Bijaypur river. After breakfast next morning, transport will drop clients
off in Pokhara.

TREK AROUND MANASLU 18 DAYS
Grade 4 Strenuous

The trek starts with a three-hour road journey west out of the Kathmandu Valley, dropping down to join the Trishuli River then turning north from Malekhu to the village of Arughat. The first few days follow the Buri Gandaki river and much time is spent among the settlements of the river valley. The culture and people here are largely unaffected by the outside world or many trekkers, and it is a fascinating introduction to the area. Climbing up it becomes a superb trek across the remote wilderness including crossing the dramatic Larkya La (pass). This lies high on the northern flanks of Manaslu and within a few miles of the Tibetan border. The Larkya La links the upper reaches of the Buri Gandaki Valley with the Marsyangdi and is the key to completing the entire circuit of the Manaslu Himal. Because of its proximity to the border, this wild and beautiful region remained off limits to trekking parties until 1992 and is still largely unexplored. Fortunately, Mountain Travel Nepal's founder, Lt Col, Jimmy Roberts was a member of Tilman's exploratory trek in 1950. He crossed the Larkya La, so we have a long association with the region that no other trekking agency can match. Day 18 ends the trek at the road head above Bhulbule, in the Marsyangdi valley. Mountain Travel Transport will bring you back to Kathmandu.
Note: This is still a partially restricted area attracting a higher permit fee. Moreover tea houses are very limited and it is a superb classical tented trek.
Dates Tues 13 Oct - Fri 30 Oct 2009
Tues 6 April- Fri 23 April 2010
Price Trek cost is US $ 1490 per person.
Transport, conservation fee, taxes (subject
to change) US $ 895 per person.
Note: We require a minimum of four people to operate this trek.
TREK MACHHAPUCHARE TREK 8 DAYS
Grade 2/3
Machhapuchhare (The Fish Tail) mountain dominates the Pokhara valley. At the base of the south of the mountain lies what Jimmy Roberts described as "the Other Sanctuary". On the west flank there is a tempting trekking peak Mardi Himal, 5587 metres. The approach to the area is best via Ghachok village on the Seti Khola. Climbing up through forest, the ridgeline is reached and the open grazing country around Korchan and Kumai. A day to acclimatize is essential and one can enjoy one of the greatest Himalayan views of all. Then on up to the remote and wild Sanctuary, and exploration of the area. The return can be back down the same ridgeline to Riban or steeply east through the pheasant reserve of Pipar and Keruwa village at the north end of the Seti khola. This is one of the most spectacular, but least trekked areas. There are no tea-houses, some climbs are steep, not many villages, just wonderful country with some of the greatest mountain views possible.
Dates Tues 6 Oct - Tues 13 Oct
Tues 20 Oct - Tue 27 Oct
Price Trek cost is US $ 690 per person.
Transfer, conservation fee, taxes
(subject to change) US $ 240 per person.
Transport To/ From Pokhara: Choice of

b. By Road: Deluxe Tourist coach cost (Approx 6 hrs) is US $ 20.00 per person including Lunch.
c. By Road: Private car can also be arranged
TREK HELAMBU TREK 8 DAYS
Grade 1 / 2
Lying immediately to the north of Kathmandu, the Helambu area is underrated as a trekkers' destination. About 1 hour drive from the city to Sundarijal followed by a climb up to the valley rim. Fine Mountain views east and west and some good campsites. The trek continues up the ridgeline before descending to Melamchi Khola and then climbing to the Sherpa village of Tarkegyang. Turn north-west to the village of Melamchigaon before a steep climb to the ridgeline Tharapati. From here, it is a lovely ridgeline walk back to the Kathmandu valley rim.
Dates Tues 3 Nov - Tues10 Nov
Mon 1 March - Mon 8 March 2010
Price Trek cost is US $ 670 per person.
Transport, conservation fee, taxes (subject to change) US $ 198 per person.
TREK THE LANGTANG VALLEY 9 DAYS
Grade: 2/3
The Langtang valley lies east-west close to the Tibetan border. The approach from Kathmandu is by road north to Trishuli bazaar and on to Dhunche and Syabrubesi. The trek starts through villages and into rhododendron forest before steadily climbing east. Gradually, the valley opens out into Laurabina yak pastures. A beautiful valley with spectacular mountain views of Langtang Lirung, Ganga La Chuli and Jugal Himal. After time for exploration, return via Dhunche. Being a steep sided valley it can feel a bit cold and remote in the colder months, but is wonderful post monsoon or in the spring with the rhododendrons and wild flowers in bloom.
